English Habitat is a complete learning platform. It has everything you need to master the English language:

1. Learning content and materials
2. Learning guidance
3. A learning community

Most English Habitat content is available free of charge once you have registered as a member.

Some of the content is governed by a BY-NC-SA Creative Commons licence (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike). This license permits you to remix, tweak, and build upon the work non-commercially, as long as you credit English Habitat, and license your new creations under the identical terms. English Habitat encourages you to access, interact with, and be inspired by the learning materials. By promoting active engagement and creativity we create fertile soil for learning.

Some content and features are available only if you sign up for a Premium membership.

1. English language learning materials

We want English Habitat to attract people of all stripes, so we have something for everyone.

We also want the content to be easily navigable – easy to find, sort, sequence, connect, mix, and combine. There is an extensive system behind the scenes to categorise the content.

For learners, teachers, and tutors. All of the materials can be used by learners, teachers, and tutors.

Proficiency levels. There is material available for all levels of proficiency, from absolute beginners to expert users.

Language skills. There is material to develop all four language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), and to learn vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.

Formats. There are different types of content, including tutorials, exercises, and activities. Some content is available in different digital media (text, images, sound, video etc.).

Topics. Contents cover a broad range of subject matter so you will always find something of interest.

Activities. There are activities that can be done individually, in pairs, or in larger groups; with varying levels of additional materials; and in more or less time. These categories are useful to help plan learning tasks and activities.

Domains. There is material available for different purposes, based on the principal reason why you are learning English. We call this the “domain” in which you use English. This includes the personal/social domain, school/higher education, and work/business.

2. Guidance

Of course, it is not recommended to move through all of this content randomly.

So much time spent learning languages is used inefficiently, because it is not the right thing at the right time, not enough of one thing, too much of another thing, or just not in the right order.

That’s why there are many clues to help guide you through the material, and there are different ways to explore and navigate the content.

The intuitive platform design with content categorisation, navigation pathways, and signposts should make it easy for you to make progress. But there is also specific support to help you learn how to learn.

Learning to learn (L2L)

“Learning to learn” is the ultimate meta-skill. Really, it is the only skill you need for life in the 21st century. It is also, regrettably and conspicuously, absent in formal education curricula around the world.

Learning skills facilitate the learning process. They consist of:

broad mindsets and attitudes
approaches and strategies (for example, goal setting, time management, iteration)
meta-cognitive skills (planning, monitoring and evaluation; self-reflection)
specific cognitive skills (for example, vocabulary learning techniques, note taking)

Mastering learning skills leads to learners developing a sense of self-efficacy – a powerful driving force for taking on any learning challenge.

3. A learning community

English Habitat is a community of language learners and teachers. It has interactive features. These aim to foster a stimulating, activating learning environment, and promote learning exchanges between members.

Comments

Most content on English Habitat allows for members to add comments.

Member pages

When you sign up, a member page is created for you. This is your own personal space. Member pages can be set to private or public; the default is public.

Your username can be used to tag you (for example, @JaneDoe).

You can search for other English Habitat members to connect with. For example, people who share your first language, or people who live in the same city, or people who are at the same level of English as you.

When you’re signed in, you can keep track of your interactions with the learning content. You can: like content; bookmark it (save it for later); and mark the content as completed.

English Habitat tracks your activity on the site, for example your completed learning content and your comments left throughout the site. It records your learning journey.

Blog

The English Habitat blog is updated regularly with short posts. This can be an interesting quote, picture, or word/phrase/expression, or a quick poll or quiz.

The objective is to stimulate interaction in English. The blog post itself contains some kind of written or spoken language input – a conversation starter or “prompt” – something for you to look at, read or listen to. The real fun starts in the comments. Comments provide you with the opportunity to practice expressing and exchanging your ideas and opinions, based on what you’ve read or heard in the original post or from other members.
