English Habitat is not just a library of web pages with learning content, it is a learning community. The interactions – between the content, between content and people, and between people – are much more important than the content itself.

In order to create and maintain a community, it is necessary to have some kind of boundary. Registration is a bit like a fence around a garden. It helps keep the community safe and on mission.

The fence should not pose a high barrier to entry. English Habitat is not an exclusive little club. It is quick and easy to sign up and become a member. Anyone with a desire to learn is welcome.

At a minimum, you must agree to the terms of use, privacy policy, and community guidelines.

When you create your member profile, you establish some basic facts about yourself: who you are, and why you are here.

This demonstrates, at least in some small part, your commitment to the learning journey. It establishes this not just to the platform and to yourself, but to all of the others, signalling your commitment to them as well. In short, it puts some skin in the game.

Pseudonymity and User Authentication

It is a well-known phenomenon that people tend to behave worse on the internet than they do in person. When people are allowed anonymity and an audience, they will often act in an antisocial manner.

English Habitat requires registration to give up at least some of your anonymity. English Habitat does not mandate members use their real identity, but instead encourages pseudonymity. You can choose whatever username you want on the platform, as long as this identity is consistent and persistent. You cannot create more than one account. Only your email address is verified.

If you choose to become a Premium member, your username will be linked privately to your real identity. You will be “authenticated”. This will give you a lot more benefits.
